About Neurospinal Socieity of Japan

Neurosurgery in Japan originated from general surgery and has expanded to include the treatment of head trauma, brain tumors, and cerebral stroke, and has gradually come to include the disease of spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerve. Neurospinal Society of Japan (NSJ) started in 1986 as "National study group for neurosurgeons to discuss the spine surgery". The first memorable meeting was held in Tokyo on July 6, 1986, with Kenzo Yada as the congress chairman. NSJ started with seven founding members, but the number of NSJ members grown rapidly to 486 three years after and more than 1000 seven years after its establishment. Founding members of NSJ were Hiroshi Abe, Akira Hakuba, Satoru Kadoya, Chikao Nagashima, Hiroshi Nakagawa, Masamichi Tomonaga and Kenzo Yada.

In 2006, the governance of NSJ was changed from the traditional system to the current board of director system. In 2011, NSJ became a general incorporated association. To date, NSJ has developed into a branch society of the Japan Neurosurgical Society responsible for the subspecialty of spine and spinal cord surgery, what we call it as neurospine surgery. Neurospine surgery is the unique and major field of neurosurgery by international standards. NSJ is now actively working not only on the exchange of information among NSJ members but also on the education, clinical research, medical insurance system, international exchange, and accreditation of subspecialty license certified by the Japan Medical Specialty Board. The goal of NSJ is to contribute to national health and welfare by further promoting the advancement of neurospine surgery.

As of September 2024, NSJ has 1422 members in total, including 14 honorary board-certified instructors, 172 board-certified instructors and 558 board-certified surgeons.
